Now you are sorted with a swimsuit it is time to think about a beach cover up. After spending many holidays struggling to get my sandy body into a t-shirt and pair of shorts after a day on the beach – a couple of years ago I looked at what the locals wear to the beach for some inspiration. French, Italian and Spanish women tend to slip on a dress or tunic after a day in the sun. These are usually simple, loose; cotton garments that actually make the wearer look elegant!
So let’s take inspiration from these women and see what we could do. To ensure that you are getting maximum wear from your holiday wardrobe, you could wear a tunic or dress in the evening and then it can be worn to the beach on subsequent days.
Beach Cover Up Options
The easiest and simplest beach cover up – great if you are at the pool or just going for lunch, but you might need more of a cover up if you have to catch a bus or walk a distance to the beach! An easy alternative to the sarong is the Saress a fab mix of dress and sarong that my sister swears by.
A kaftan or tunic can be great as they offer good coverage – but beware if you have a pear or hourglass body shape as most kaftans are very straight and the hem tends to finish at the widest part of your thighs! If you want to wear a kaftan then look for some shaping – a drawstring, elastic or seam under the bust or around the waist plus ensure that it is longer and finishes at least mid thigh.
These are great beach cover ups – again ensure that the hem doesn’t stop at a wide part of you leg or look for an asymmetric hem. Dresses can be mid thigh to ankle length, again look for some shape – either ruching across the bust, a tie belt or an empire line. One thing to be aware of is the straps – eg if all your swimwear is halterneck then try and find halterneck dresses to reflect the same line.
This season there are also a number of playsuits/jumpsuits around which are another good option as they are loose and easy to pull on.
- So say goodbye to shapeless t-shirts and tops on the beach and add some glamour!
