I think Penny describes our job perfectly!
|
“Whilst attending a Women in Business Convention in 2007 one of the motivational speakers enthused “when you do what you love every day, you will never have to work again”. I was enjoying the ‘world’ of management consultancy but knew that I needed a change to achieve that personal goal. I contacted Gail at The Image House, explained my retail and corporate background and was confident that she was the person to help me use my skills to start my perfect career. I completed my Study in Style Foundation training with her in 2008 and now I love what I do – I love that I have a business which allows me to be creative, I love the flexibility it allows me, I love the variety it provides, I love the rewards (both financial and personal) and most of all I love the fact that I help people look their best everyday and will never have to ‘work’ again”. Penny Bateman, North Yorks: – www.uimageconsultancy.co.uk |
Imagine what it would be like to work in the image industry everyday…..
It isn’t an impossible dream, I have lived it and helped many others, just like Penny, live it as well. So whether you are changing career for something more flexible and creative or adding a new dimension to your existing skill set we can help you achieve your dream.
I want you to enjoy the working life that I have over the past 19 years. It has been my privilege to work with numerous clients during this time, some rich, some famous, but mostly clients who were not so rich or famous but who really needed a huge boost of self-esteem. I have been lucky enough to transform many of their lives, helping them to gain confidence and realise how good they can look.
With the advent of TV makeover programmes and the emergence of life coaching, image consultancy has moved its focus towards styling and ensuring that we actually listen to what the client wants! – No more scary image consultants with big hair, big earrings and even bigger shoulder pads! As part of your training we discuss how to talk and listen to your clients as well as how to put together different packages to sell to them.

I may be involved in a lot of training nowadays but I am still a practicing image consultant, working one to one with my clients in their wardrobes and in the shops. I love the buzz that I get when I know that I have changed the way that client feels about their clothes, shopping and themselves – there really is no better feeling!
This is a growing industry. With the increase in these “makeover” programmes on the television, people have become much more aware of selecting the right clothes to suit them and their body. The same applies to beauty products and make-up. Men have become more image aware and in the workplace first impressions are imperative for both men and women. As people become busier the need for personal shoppers has escalated so the image industry looks very different now to how it did in 1992!
This has led to an increase in people training and working in this sector. We may be known as “image consultants”, “personal stylists”, “fashion stylists”, “fashion advisors” or “personal shoppers”; but what we all have in common is the knowledge and the demeanour to help and support our clients to find clothes that suit them, their lifestyle, their personality and their budget.
N.B. A “stylist” traditionally, may have a slightly different role – probably employed by a magazine, ad agency or TV company to work with models, organising and styling photo shoots or adverts.
Our Study in Style courses and modules can guide and support you through your learning and help you set-up and market your new skills.
Our modules include the four foundation modules that make up the TFIC/City and Guilds Masters Award in Image Consultancy.
All of these modules can be ordered individually or you can enrol on our complete Foundation Course and take advantage of our discounted rate.
The accredited and professional Study in Style Courses and Modules can help you achieve your dream simply and quickly, with my support and your fellow trainees.
I have developed these courses over the years and apart from covering all the competencies necessary for the Master’s Award in image consultancy, I have included case studies and examples from my career and clients – this isn’t all text book stuff I can assure you!
These courses are for you if you want to experience training in a small group environment, you will also learn by listening and watching me work with a number of model clients and your fellow trainees.
Some Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need to train? I already have an “eye” for style and I’ve read a couple of books, surely that is enough to get me started?
The Study in Style courses offer you the underpinning knowledge, theory and skills to be able to work with a variety of clients. You will be trained to give objective, professional and informed advice on what suits them, as well as what doesn’t work! As a qualified consultant you will also be able to demand higher fees.
What are the benefits of training with an FIPI Audited Training Provider?
Because it gives you peace of mind and assures a professional, quality standard. Our training content, equipment and materials are all audited by The Federation of Image Consultants (trading as FIPI), ensuring that our training meets the standards set by the TFIC/City & Guilds of London, Masters Award in Image Consultancy. The Study in Style course content is simple to understand and implement both for you as a consultant and for your clients.
What makes the Study in Style courses unique?
Because you get the benefit of my experience, expertise and enthusiasm! I still work with real life clients every week, so I can certainly “walk the walk and talk the talk”. The colour analysis system that we use is simple, effective and easy to understand. I break down the style training into easy to follow, manageable chunks and because of my knowledge working as a personal shopper, I can pass on invaluable tips.
Who is the Foundation Course for?
The Foundation Course is for anyone who is interested in learning more about image consultancy and how to build a successful image business. No prior colour analysis or style knowledge is required, and there is no need to have any retail or fashion experience. In fact, we have consultants who had previously worked as engineers, air traffic controllers, marketing executives and stand-up comedians!
What are the benefits of Face to Face Learning?
You will be receiving hands-on, interactive training in a small group. There are a maximum of 3 trainees on each Face to Face module or course. Our courses are held in a relaxed, creative setting in either Hertfordshire or Central London, giving each student individual attention plus the opportunity to try out their new skills with immediate feedback and advice from Gail and their fellow students. All refreshments and lunches are included in the course fee – you only need to remember to bring a pen!
Will I need to buy any extra equipment from you before I can start trading?
The training fee includes all equipment and visual aids to allow you to start working (and earning money!) in that subject straight away. There are no hidden costs and no panicking about having to buy extra equipment, however most consultants will buy a few swatches to keep in stock once they have completed their colour analysis training.
What equipment is included in the Colour Analysis Module?
In the Colour Analysis module you will receive:
- A set of 89 colour drapes, used to determine the client’s best colours.
- A training manual printed in full colour.
- Four seasonal colour swatches.
- Colour chart and artist’s colour wheel.
- Eye analyser, cover-up cape and hair turban.
- Four lipsticks and a set of applicators.
- A set of fabric samples.
- A DVD of example clients.
- An audio CD containing invaluable business management tips.
- A compact case in which to transport all of your equipment and products.
Do I have to achieve a minimum sales target?
No! You will be allowed to run your business as you wish, with support and help from Head Office and with no pressure to sell products. Make-up and product sales can help boost your profitability but it is your decision as to how much you want to promote and sell any other items.
How do I get my new business up and running?
As part of the Foundation Course we look at how to market and develop your business – what to do and what not to do! This is backed up with a business management CD that you can listen to at any time, to help you to think through your ideas. For example, we look at how to promote your business services, deal with telephone enquiries, plan a website, write an elevator pitch and price your services appropriately.
How soon can I start working as a consultant?
You will be able to start your business as soon as you have finished the Course, although you will probably be practising on your friends and family whilst you’re learning.
Do I have to set up a studio or can I work as a mobile consultant?
The Study in Style Foundation Course Modules are all designed to be flexible and to cater for both the mobile and studio based Consultant. A compact carry case in which to transport all of your equipment and products is supplied with the colour analysis and make-up modules. Everything packs up neatly and quickly into this case and unlike some other systems, there are no cumbersome drape stands or make-up displays to set up before you start a consultation.

You could study the Colour Analysis Module, building a stand alone colour business or use it for example, within your existing hairdressing or fashion retail business; alternatively it could be the first part of your Foundation Training. We use and teach a simple and proven system of colour analysis, based around the seasonal system, which is easy both for you to understand and then explain to your client. You will be taught the history and the science behind colour analysis and then be shown how to undertake a colour consultation from start to finish. This step-by-step guide will help you analyse anyone quickly and easily. Topics covered on the Colour Analysis Training Module:
